Using Glass to Make a Room Look Larger

When dealing with small rooms, there are some tricks you can use to fool the eye and give the room the illusion of being larger than it really is. One of these tricks is to use glass surfaces, in the form of mirrors, glass tabletops, windows, and other reflective glass surfaces to create the illusion of space. Glass, because of its reflective properties, can increase the level of light within a room, and as a general rule, the eye perceives light as being more spacious than darkness. There are a number of different methods you can use to add extra light and visual space to a room, simply by adding more glass surfaces.

Add Mirrors to Add Size

Although adding a mirror to a room doesn't physically increase its size, the reflection of other areas of the room in the mirror can give the illusion of the room continuing on, making it appear larger. Mirrors also are very good for making good use of the amount of light that is in a room, whether it be natural sunlight or light from auxiliary light fixtures within the room. When placing a mirror to accentuate the size of a room, try placing it in a prominent location, such as the space your eyes would naturally go to when you enter a room. Placing it in a spot where it will pick up light from the room is also a good idea but avoid placing a mirror where direct sunlight will hit it, as this can produce uncomfortable levels of glare and reflection in the room during certain times of the day.

Increase the Illusion of Space with Glass Surfaces

In addition to adding mirrors, try adding shiny reflective glass surfaces to a room, such as a glass table or glass-topped coffee table. Because of the clear nature of glass, it blends easily into the background of the room, and when you can see through the glass, it's almost as if the piece of furniture isn't there. This can create the look of wider open spaces, and a better flow throughout the room. If you have a small dining room, for example, using a clear glass-topped table as opposed to one made from wood will make the room seem larger.

Bring the Outdoors Inside

Opening the curtains to expose large expanses of windows is also a great way to use glass to make a room appear larger. Especially in the case of large picture windows, skylights, French doors, sliding patio doors, and other large types of windows, opening the curtains will visually give the impression of the room being less closed in, since your eye will naturally flow from the inside of the room to the outside. This can be especially effective in rooms that lead out onto a patio or deck. By not using curtain panels or blinds on the glass door leading to the outdoors, the patio or deck space will appear to simply be a continuation of the room, making it appear larger than it really is.
