How to Decorate with Artificial Flowers
Fresh flowers are a beautiful decoration whether you have picked them from your own garden or purchased them from the farmer’s market or grocery store. However, these can be expensive, especially out of season, so it is lucky that the quality of artificial flowers has drastically improved recently. You are no longer limited to ugly plastic flowers that are obviously fake in horrid colors. These atrocities have been replaced with silk flowers and foliage that can be used in any season to decorate your home.
One of the most important things when using artificial flowers and foliage is to change your displays as the seasons change. Poinsettias should not still be around by Memorial Day and daffodils look out of place in August. Do not purchase only flowers either. Vines and other foliage are a nice change and easy to put in many places, including on a table, in a wreath or a basket. Floral picks make decorating with artificial flowers a much simpler task. They can be tucked into baskets or even on a cake in order to create an elegant display.
Working with the Seasons Place arrangements on your kitchen table or dining room table and then swap them out as the seasons change. During the winter holidays, use holly, red berries, and ivy along with winter flowers, such as poinsettias arranged in metal baskets with Christmas ornaments and presents. After the holidays are over, all it takes is removing the ornaments and adding other items, such as pinecones, more berries, cinnamon sticks, and other items to make them last all winter.
In the spring, make a centerpiece with a cake stand. Place a ceramic planter in spring colors on top of the stand and fill it with spring blossoms, such as daffodils and apple blossoms. During Easter, add plastic eggs and little bunnies to the mix. When summer comes, choose from many different types of summer blossoms, such as pansies. Switch to mums and other fall flowers when autumn comes.
Tabletop designs are quite simple to make if you use objects, such as vases, topiaries, dinnerware, table runners, and cake stands. Something as easy as teacups with blossoms in every cup adds color and beauty to a table. If you want a different effect, try weaving artificial vines around the table or letting vines drop from the levels of a tiered stand.
Grouped Arrangements You may think that you have no talent for arranging flowers, but you will find yourself pleasantly surprised at the beautiful arrangements you can create simply by using repeated elements in your display. For example, try placing different vases of various sizes on a big platter. Place blossoms into each of the vases along with a few blooms on the tray itself to create a stunning arrangement for any coffee table or nightstand. If you are looking for something to brighten up a windowsill try small vases in the same color and type. Place a bloom in each of the glasses or only a couple of them.
You can create a more natural looking arrangement by using flowers of different heights. This can be easily accomplished by trimming the ends of the flowers. Place the taller blooms in the back of the arrangement while letting trailing flowers and foliage fall over the edges to add variety to the arrangement. What is great about artificial flowers is that they can handle a lot of rearranging, so go ahead an experiment with rearranging until you come up with one you love.
