Easy Wainscoting Adds Elegance to a Dining Room
If you are looking for a way to add some distinctive style and elegance to your living room, wainscoting could be the perfect solution. Wainscoting adds a rich look to a room that is almost impossible to achieve with other decorating materials. Some people mistakenly think that installing wainscoting is a difficult procedure. This is because in the past, installing solid wood wainscoting, such as is found in older homes, was pretty much an art, and required an experienced carpenter. Fortunately, modern raised panel wainscoting is much simpler to install, and is well within the reach of most do-it-yourself homeowners.
Choosing Your Wainscoting
There are two basic grades of modern wainscoting available. There is a paint grade, which comes from the factory ready to paint. This is the choice you want to make if you plan to paint the wainscoting a custom color to match your overall room decor. There is also wainscoting that has a wood finish, which is often achieved by using a wood veneer over a core. This style is available in many natural wood finishes, such as oak, maple or cherry. Modern Wainscoting Modern wainscoting solves some of the problems that existed with traditional solid wood wainscoting. First, it is much easier to install, which generally involves fitting the pieces together and trimming at the corners. Second, it is a more environmentally friendly product, because the core is usually engineered wood or a recycled type of product. Third, because of this engineered core, it's a much more stable product than solid wood, and is much less likely to expand, contract, crack or warp. However, if you do desire solid wood wainscoting, or that which manufactured from a blend of wood, these are generally available as well. Effects Achieved with Wainscoting There are a number of different decorating effects that you can create with wainscoting. If you choose a style that has raised panels, your dining room will look more formal. On the other hand, if you choose a style that has more of a bead board effect, the look will be more casual. Dark stained wainscoting has a formal or masculine look, while white painted wainscoting looks fresh and youthful. Whichever you choose, using it on the lower portion of the walls in the dining room is not only beautiful, but also easy to maintain. When combined in the dining room with a chair rail, it provides a lot of visual interest and variety, as well as serving to protect the walls from the tops of the chairs. Cost of Wainscoting If the cost of wainscoting just isn't within the budget of your dining room redecorating project, you do have other options. For instance, you could create the overall look of wainscoting by using wood moldings and glue. You can select some interesting styles of molding, and fit them together in rectangles and squares in a traditional wainscoting style, simply by cutting the molding with a miter saw and applying the pieces to the wall with glue. You can then complete the overall look by adding a chair rail molding around the top. |
