Tips On Lighting Your Home

Basicly, there are three types of lighting for any room in your home. These include general, task, and accent. When deciding how you want to light different areas of your home, consider each room individually. The lighting requirements will depend on factors such as what type of activity goes on, what style and atmosphere are you trying to create, what tasks need to be performed, where will people sit, and what objects in the room do you want to emphasize. Lighting plays an extremely important role in creating the overall mood of any room.

Indoor Lighting Tips

•	Living Room Your living room usually requires all three lighting types: general lighting for entertaining and watching TV, task lighting for reading, and accent lighting on plants, artwork, end tables or unique architecture. Dimmer switches and recessed lighting can create a warm and relaxed atmosphere.

•	Kitchen The kitchen requires bright, overhead ceiling fixtures for general lighting, as well as task lighting for counter tops, sinks and stoves. Try using energy efficient bulbs for ceiling fixtures and track lighting for work areas.

•	Dining Room A chandelier over the diningroom table is the focal point and provides the general lighting for this room, as well as providing task lighting for eating and entertaining. Additional accent lighting on buffetts and hutches adds to the style and feel of the room.

•	Bathroom Lighting fixtures can be placed on each side or above the bathroom mirror for task lighting needed for shaving, applying makeup and general grooming. A ceiling fixture adds additional general lighting for larger bathrooms. An enclosed damp-location recessed downlight adds additional light to shower and tub enclosers.
