Organizing Your Child's Room

Set A Good Example!

Your children not only look up to you, they naturally will immitate what they see you doing, or not doing. If you're a mess, how can you expect them to be tidy and organized? Help them develope good habits that will last a lifetime by teaching them how to pick up after themselves. It will save both of you time and frustration.

Involve Your Child In The Process

It might seem easier at first to just go in their room when they're not around and clean it yourself. But this will just make it harder for both of you later. Start involving your child from a young age how to recognize, sort and organize objects. Clear plastic tubs are a great way to organize and store toys. Putting a small basketball hoop over the laundry hamper and wastebasket is a fun way to encourage these items to be used instead of the floor. Be creative and make cleaning a fun activity you can do together.

Out With The Old , In With The New

At least once or twice a year, maybe around Christmas and your child's birthday, box up old toys and clothes that they've outgrown. Have a disscussion with your child about the homeless and less fortunate children in your community that depend on help from others. Not only is this a great way to keep the room from becoming too cluttered, its a great way to teach your child the gift of giving and encourages them to get involved in their community.

Seasonal Storeage

This is a great way to free up space in dressers and closets. In the summer, store heavy winter clothes, ice skates, snow boots, ect. in boxes under the bed, in the attic, basement or garage. Do the same in winter for all the warm weather clothes and toys. Use clear plastic tubs wth tight fitting lids or vaccume sealed storeage bags to keep out dust, mold and mildew.
